From Pier 2 in Old San Juan, visitors can cross San Juan Bay to the city of Cataño, which is located along Puerto Rico's northern shore.
Most visitors will make the five minute journey aboard one of the Cataño Ferries in order to tour the Bacardi Rum Factory, but the trip is also a great opportunity to get great views of the island's forts.
The Cataño Ferries carry about 100 passengers at one time, in cabins that may or may not be air conditioned depending upon which vessel you happen to get. The trip is short, and the sea breeze through the open windows keeps things cool on the ferries without air conditioning, so heat is rarely an issue.
The cost of a trip aboard a Cataño Ferry is $0.50(USD) each way, and ferries leave every 15 to 30 minutes between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily.
