Telephone service in Puerto Rico is modern and reliable and will be familiar to American citizens.
The international access code for calling Puerto Rico is 1-787 and the outgoing code is 011 followed by the relevant country code, such as 01144 for the United Kingdom.
The outgoing code is not needed for calling the United States, Canada, and most of the Caribbean. Mobile phones work throughout the island, and local operators use CDMA networks that are not compatible with GSM phones. Most of Puerto Rico is on the 911 system for emergencies, including crime, fire, or medical emergency. However, there are a few exceptions, so check the phone book in your hotel room after you arrive to be sure.
Most hotels permit travelers to make telephone calls from the hotel with direct-dial services, and pay phones are also available throughout the island for making local or long-distance phone calls.
Most towns and resorts feature Internet cafés, making electronic communication another easy and convenient way to stay in touch while you're visiting Puerto Rico.
